ISO 50001 certificate to Hindalco Industries Ltd

Hindalco Industries Ltd, through its Birla Copper unit, has achieved ISO 50001:2011 certification for energy management at its mega Greenfield Copper Smelting and Refining complex in Dahej, Gujarat. The state-of-the-art plant, established with an investment of Rs. 25,000 million, produces world-class copper cathodes, continuous cast copper rods, and precious metals. Additionally, it manufactures sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, di-ammonium phosphate, and other phosphatic fertilizers. To support its extensive operations, the facility is equipped with its own power plant and jetty.

The journey towards ISO 50001:2011 certification was facilitated by Akshar Management Consultant, led by Mr. Madhukar Vasa. Renowned for his expertise in identifying energy-saving opportunities, Mr. Vasa spearheaded the initiative, which began with a gap audit for the Energy Management System (EnMS). This was followed by the formation of an energy team, the establishment of an energy policy, and comprehensive ISO awareness training. The consultancy identified multiple opportunities for energy savings, addressing operational control losses and recommending investments in energy-efficient equipment.

Within just three months, the Birla Copper unit successfully implemented the necessary measures, culminating in internal auditor training and a rigorous audit by Intertek. The certification not only reflects Hindalco’s commitment to sustainable operations but also underscores the efficiency and dedication of the Akshar Management Consultant team. The project exemplifies how systematic energy management and strategic consultancy can drive significant advancements in industrial energy efficiency.
